Dr Tom Ormerod.

Tributes have been paid after the death of a much-loved doctor who spent more than 30 years at a Kettering medical centre.

Dr Tom Ormerod, who was a GP at Linden Avenue Medical Centre, died aged 92 on December 20. Born in Blackburn in Lancashire he trained at Manchester University and was married to June, who was also a GP at Linden Avenue and died in 1993.

Dr Ormerod was inspirational in the building of two new surgeries and also had a part-time clinic in Kettering for a while, working tirelessly to provide the best medical care for people in the town.

A family statement said: “The cards and emails received from so many friends have shown how much he was loved and will be missed. “The recurring tribute has been that we have lost a true gentleman.”

The GP was a resident of Orlingbury for nearly 60 years. He was very active in the village, the rebuilding of the village hall and the provision of a flagpole on the church for the Millennium.

A keen yachtsman and golfer, he was captain of Kettering Golf Club in 1973, as well as a member of Northamptonshire Golf Club.

He also self-published a book of poems – ‘The sadness in a cow’s eye’ – and only recently completed a collection of his paintings and stories of his life.

The family statement added: “The tributes from patients in his retirement books record how well he was admired and those who knew him socially will have experienced his wonderful love of life, his hospitality and his ability to entertain, as well as his generosity and humour.”

Dr Ormerod had two children, Mark and Kate, and during retirement enjoyed life and travelled far and wide with his partner Diana.
