When a loved one dies, finances might be the last thing on your mind. However, in the weeks following a death, you will probably have to consider how you will pay for the funeral. In some instances, the cost of the funeral will be deducted from the deceased’s estate, or they may have even had a funeral plan or insurance cover in place to partially or fully cover the funeral costs.
In this article, we look at how much a funeral can cost and the factors that can alter the total price to help you better understand how much you will need to give your loved one the send-off they deserve.
What is the average cost of a cremation funeral in the UK?
According to the SunLife Cost of Dying Report 2024*, the average cost of a cremation is £3,795. Still, it may vary depending on whether the family wishes to include limousines, flowers, printing the Order of Services and a funeral wake. A direct cremation, which is just the cremation of the deceased with no ceremony or attendees, costs on average £1,498.
Both of these costs indicate an average across the country, but the location of the funeral can impact the prices charged. For example, the same report found that the average funeral cost in Northern Ireland was £3,256 compared to £5,171 in London.
What is the average cost of a burial funeral in the UK?
Following the same report from SunLife, the average burial cost is £5,077, depending on location and other factors such as funeral cars and flowers. A direct burial, which, like a direct cremation, is a burial with no ceremony or attendees, costs an average of £1,657.
